In true geek fashion, after news broke that North Korea is manufacturing its own netbooks for business and educational use, we found ourselves clustered in the ExtremeTech boardroom, brainstorming the possible uses of a North Korean Netbook (NKN). At first we worried that it would be impossible to get our hands on an actual NKN, but then we discovered that North Korea isn’t actually making its own netbooks: it’s simply re-branding very cheap ($80) Chinese ARM smartbooks.

You can use them for word processing, but that’s about it. What you really need, if you want to make the most of an $80 netbook, is Linux. Now, we can’t be entirely sure which netbook North Korea is using, but it looks a lot like a MenQ EasyPC, the Sylvania 7″ netbook, or an unbranded netbook from Deal Extreme. Not a bad deal, considering they’re equipped with RJ45 Ethernet, 802.11b/g, USB, and an SD card slot. Windows CE runs OK on such processors, but you can forget about surfing media-rich websites, or playing Flash games or YouTube videos. These netbooks can be bought for around $80 and come with Windows Embedded CE 5 or 6 installed. The only problem is that these ultra-cheap (and ultra-light: less than 1kg!) netbooks have very weak, 300-500MHz ARM CPUs.

Believe it or not, North Korea has its own distro of Linux called Red Star. If you still want to see what Red Star Linux is like, you can easily install it under VirtualBox. The best bit is that you can actually download Red Star Linux; from The Pirate Bay no less. It really is shockingly similar to Windows XP. It’s based on KDE 3, has a Linux 2.6 kernel, features a re-branded and renamed version of Firefox 2 (“Naenara”), includes a bunch of games and media players — but for the most part, it has been designed to look and feel just like Windows XP. It’s possible that the Korea Computer Center has developed an ARM port of Red Star, but if so, it hasn’t leaked beyond the DMZ yet. The state-owned Korea Computer Center has been developing Red Star since 2002, and it recently reached version 2. Unfortunately, though, Red Star is designed for x86 processors, so it won’t work with the ARM-powered $80 netbooks.

Alternatively — and this is by far the easier option — head on over to eBay and buy the cheapest Android netbook you can find. You now have two options: if you want to proceed with installing Linux on an ARM netbook, read on. Be warned, though: it’s not easy, and there’s the risk of bricking.

Oprah talks about a Baptist church that her grandmother took her to in Mississippi. Every flavor of the contemporary, spiritual rainbow is welcomed into her studio. Indeed, she has around her a large collection of spiritual purveyors of a wide variety: Buddhist, Hindu, Unity Church. Then in her adulthood, she has some criticism of male figures in the church and the dominance of male authorities and it seems that by the time we get to the ’90s, it’s circulating that she’s no longer a member of the church but she continues to use Christian idioms in her conversational speech. She tells an anecdote about how she was a successful young churchgoer and was asked to preach in front of that audience and was a very good girl who memorized scriptural passages. She says, “Jesus lives.” She’ll say, “Amen.” She’ll occasionally sing lines from obviously Protestant hymns, but she claims now that she’s no longer interested in organizational religion, and she’s more interested in a personal relationship with God.

Hungry for someone to limit their choices a little, and offer some discriminating preferences on your behalf. Hungry for guidance in the mad excesses of the American material world. I think it says that most Americans see very little that is contradictory about connecting consumption and spirituality. Hungry for recognition. I think it also shows that no matter how anti-establishment, or anti-authoritarian, or freedom-hungry Americans claim to be, they are also, always, hungry for help.

But this is about me and Oprah, and last night, she provided me with a show that spans my adult life, and through her clips from the last 25 years, I could remember what it was like to have those haircuts and wear those clothes, and what it was like to assume that most of America couldn’t stand me. Then, when Louganis took to the stage to surprise the young man, he and I dissolved into tears. This man, just a boy in 1995 (!), choked back tears as he tried to express to Oprah what Louganis’ coming out had meant to him. I remember Greg Louganis coming out as gay and HIV positive on her show, and I remember going to the bookstore to buy his book the next day. (Not ordering it on Amazon.com, mind you, but going to an actual independent bookstore to buy it.) I remember her show about a small town in the South where the powers that be drained a pool and closed it down because a man with AIDS had gone swimming there. A dear friend of mine came out when she was married to a man and had children with him, and she watched the tape of an Oprah episode about a woman in a similar situation to help her get through it. In this day and age when we are learning so much about teenage bullying and suicide, just to see a gay man say he survived being an adolescent is worth cheering. On last night’s show, one of the guests was a gay man, now happily married and living with his husband in Hawaii, who at the age of 12 had seen Greg Louganis’ episode in 1995.

This, like so many of these tales, is a story of long-hidden family secrets and private anguish. Though Winfrey’s mother declined contact twice, Patricia reached out to Winfrey’s niece, and a DNA test proved the family connection. In 2007, she saw an interview with Oprah’s mother that revealed details that corresponded with what she knew about her birth mother. Then, a few years ago, she began looking for her family. Winfrey’s parents, who never married, split up when she was very young. Oprah hadn’t even known her mother, Vernita, who by then had two other children, had even been pregnant. Patricia, whose last name has not been disclosed, meanwhile lived for years in foster care and was a mother herself before her 18th birthday. She was 8 years old and living with her father Vernon when her half-sister Patricia was born.

“I felt a little funny about it. And the nurse said, ‘But she’s so cute, why not?’” She then said she’d later gone back looking for the baby but she’d already been removed. “I was a little leery,” she admitted. That admission immediately caused Patricia to sob: “I never heard I was a pretty baby. “When I left the hospital I told the nurse I wasn’t going to be able to keep her. I thought it was a terrible thing that I had done, gave up my daughter when she was born.” She’d made the choice, she said, because she was trying to get off welfare and “wasn’t able to take care of her.” She recalled the last time she saw her child. In a segment shot when Patricia met their mother late last year, Vernita Lee talked about the daughter she gave up, and why she’d rejected her initial overtures. To know we have another half,” is a perfect articulation of what so many of us who’ve sought out missing family members have felt.
