"If there is a silver lining to this," it’s the increased attention that people are paying to safe rooms and other forms of shelter that can help individuals survive even the strongest tornadoes, says Ernst Kiesling, an engineering professor at Texas Tech University in Lubbock who also serves as executive director of the National Storm Shelter Association (NSSA), also based in Lubbock.

Meanwhile, cleanup began Thursday following another spate of tornadoes of varying intensities that touched down Wednesday in Texas, Mississippi, Louisiana, Tennessee, Arkansas, Missouri, Iowa, Oklahoma, Indiana, Illinois, and Ohio.

In some cases, people who replaced their homes put a second or third bedroom with all the amenities in the basement but hardened so that if severe weather threatened overnight, the owners could go to bed in the basement room and not have to worry about sleeping through a distant warning siren. In addition, Mr. Cassias says, designs for public buildings such as the local high school, as well as individual homes, included adequately hardened rooms to serve as storm shelters.

This year, unfortunately, we remember war dead who didn’t have to die, and unless Congress and the president act, we’ll remember more needless deaths next year. As of today, 1,516 Americans have died in the Afghanistan War, a conflict that the American people oppose and the continuation of which makes no sense. Memorial Day is a national holiday dedicated to remembering Americans killed in wartime.

As U.S. But, as Robert Naiman points out, even though McGovern/Jones amendment to the National Defense Authorization Act failed, the vote margin was so narrow (204-215) that it sent a strong signal to the president that Congress’ patience with the constantly deteriorating and resource-hungry war was running out. troops were suffering their worst losses in Afghanistan since Bin Laden’s death. John Mica (R-Fla.) put it, “[W]hen somebody comes up with the right amendment, it’s going to pass.”. House of Representatives narrowly failed to agree to amendments that would have reined in the brutal, futile war on the same day U.S. In a bitter moment of irony this week, the U.S. Rep.

Please take a moment to sign our petition to bring the troops home. Congress and the president need to act to end this war immediately so that next year’s list is drastically shorter. Below are the names of the troops who died in that conflict just since last Memorial Day. Today, we remember Americans killed during the Afghanistan War.

The research provides the first evidence that early ACC formation played a vital role in the formation of the modern ocean structure. The paper, titled “Impact of Antarctic Circumpolar Current development on late Paleogene ocean structure,” is published in the May 27, 2011, issue of Science.”What we have found is that the evolution of the Antarctic Circumpolar Current influenced global ocean circulation much earlier than previous studies have shown,” said Katz, who is assistant professor of earth and environmental science at Rensselaer. The organisms, known as benthic foraminifera, are found in extremely long cores of sediments drilled from the bottom of the ocean floor.During their lifetime, foraminifera incorporate certain elements and elemental isotopes depending on environmental conditions. Previous research has placed the development of the deep ACC (greater than 2,000 meters water depth) in the late Oligocene (approximately 23-25 million years ago). This blocking of heat enabled the formation and preservation of the Antarctic ice sheets, according to Katz. This is well after the global cooling pattern had been established. The findings place development of the ACC’s global impact much closer to the time that Antarctica separated from South America. In the more tropical environs of the Eocene, ocean circulation was much weaker and currents were more diffuse. Warmer ocean waters result in warmer air temperatures and vice versa. By analyzing the ratios of different isotopes and elements, the researchers are able to reconstruct the past environmental conditions that surrounded the foraminifera during their life. The ACC instead redirects some of that warm surface water back up toward the North Atlantic, creating the Antarctic Intermediate Water. Today, ocean temperatures vary considerably and redistribute warm and cold water around the globe in significant ways.”As the global ocean currents were formed and strengthened, the redistribution of heat likely played a significant role in the overall cooling of the Earth,” Katz said. And no current is more significant than the ACC. More detailed information on Katz’s isotopic analysis methods can be found at http://green.rpi.edu/archives/fossils/index.html.Analysis of these isotopes from sediment cores extracted directly off the North American Atlantic coast showed the earliest evidence for the Antarctic Intermediate Waters, which circulates strictly as a direct consequence of the ACC. And it is this circumpolar circulation that Katz’s research concludes was responsible for the development of our modern four-layer ocean current and heat distribution system. To come to her conclusions, Katz looked at the uptake of different elemental isotopes in the skeletons of small organisms found in ocean sediments. A debate has long been raging in the scientific community on what changes in our global climate system led to such a major shift from the more tropical, greenhouse climate of the Eocene to the modern and much cooler climates of today.New research published in the journal Science, led by Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute scientist Miriam Katz, is providing some of the strongest evidence to date that the Antarctic Circumpolar Current (ACC) played a key role in the major shift in the global climate that began approximately 38 million years ago. Specifically, they looked at isotopes of oxygen and carbon, along with ratios of magnesium versus calcium. This finding is the first evidence of the effects of shallow ACC formation. With this research, Katz and her colleagues used information from ocean sediments to place the global impact of the ACC to approximately 30 million years ago, when it was still just a shallow current.Oceans and global temperatures are closely linked. It had previously been thought that the currents moving through this new continental gateway could not be strong enough at such shallow depths to affect global ocean circulation.Katz points out that the larger cooling trend addressed in the paper has been punctuated by many short, but often significant, episodes of global warming. Often referred to as the “Mixmaster” of the ocean, the ACC thermally isolates Antarctica by preventing warm surface waters from subtropical gyres to pass through its current. This resulted in fairly mild oceans and temperatures worldwide, according to Katz. As a result, heat was more evenly distributed around the world. Such ancient episodes of warming are another significant aspect of her research program, and play an important role in understanding the modern warming of the climate occurring on the planet.”By reconstructing the climates of the past, we can provide a science-based means to explore or predict possible system responses to the current climate change,” Katz said. The temperature differences of that era, known as the late Eocene, between the equator and Antarctica were only half of what they are today. “This finding is particularly significant because it places the impact of initial shallow ACC circulation in the same interval when the climate began its long-term shift to cooler temperatures.”There has been a debate over the past 40 years on what role the Antarctic Circumpolar Current had in the underlying cooling trend on Earth.

Like in A River Runs Through It, the actor again portrayed a free-spirited brother in a period film, this time opposite Anthony Hopkins, Aidan Quinn and Julia Ormond. Legends of the Fall (1994)Just a month after his Anne Rice adaptation Interview with a Vampire hit theaters, Brad Pitt returned to the multiplex for Legends of the Fall. His role in this forbidden romance earned him his first Golden Globe nomination and almost as important to his career (if not more so), the title of People’s Sexiest Man Alive.

Come on now people, maybe Kym from the Hamptons has a form of Tourette’s where she just has to post that she’s from the Hamptons all over this site. I’m pale (I’m a red head, so I kinda have to be), and I would never want to put myself in the position to look like a leather bag and eventually get skin cancer or put that fake tan stuff on my skin that will make me look like I just took a bath in a tub full of cheetos or with the “Jersey Shore” cast. I think this study is completely right, but it’s everyone, not just woment. It’s more based, not on weight, but on skin tone, both girls are the same size, but most think the tan girl is slimmer. So, the picture of the two girls just proved the power of perception from some people. I wish it were different, but sadly, I don’t think it will change anytime soon, no matter how hard we try to change it. It’s sad how weight has completely taken over our culture and seems to be what we use to judge others before we get to know them as people.

Straggly hair is another no-no. I’m a busy wife, mother and successful businesswoman, so I don’t have an awful lot of time to waste on mediocre people. Basically, our appearance is a reflection of our character, so why waste time on slobs? And before anyone accuses me of being shallow: I speak as I find, deal with it. And I’m always suspicious of people who haven’t looked after their teeth. I must admit a woman’s size *is* the first thing I notice (fat women are usually quite weak and crafty, in my experience) but next on my list is tattoos. Any kind of body “art” = instant DQ. I don’t mean that to sound harsh - I’m sure lots of busy people will agree with me. So judging other women by appearances when I first meet them is quite useful.

The former University of Michigan and NBA basketball star admitted in court that he took the wheel after downing six martinis. He faces possible penalties of 93 days in jail and a $500 fine. ESPN analyst Jalen Rose pleaded guilty to drunken driving in a Michigan court Wednesday, according to the Associated Press. Rose crashed his SUV into a tree.

ESPN pulled Rose off the airwaves after the incident but he returned recently to analyze the NBA Playoffs. Spokesman Mike Soltys said Wednesday that ESPN has already addressed the issue. Rose sparked a war of words between former Michigan and Duke players by recalling in his doc that the Blue Devils preferred to recruit “Uncle Tom” African-American athletes when he was entering college.

Scientists reported in the journal Nature this week that for every star, there could be two free-agent Jupiters roaming the Milky Way. The world, after all, has avoided being a cosmic billiard ball for billions of years. “That’s pretty cool,” he writes. Rogue planet deathblow. “Are we in danger from these puppies?” wondered astronomer Phil Plait, writing in his Bad Astronomy blog for Discover Magazine. His calculations suggest, if rogues are as common as stars, there’s one for about every 100 cubic light-years – or one closer to Earth than Alpha Centauri, the closest star besides the sun. Of course, a head-on crash would obliterate the Earth, but Plait isn’t losing sleep. Or, could a rogue unleash a torrent of deadly comets from the Oort Cloud out past Pluto? The odds, again, are “incredibly small,” he figures. Jupiter’s a relative neighbor but its gravity is no problem here. That’s such “a vast, mind-numbing volume of space,” there’s no reason to fear earthquake-inducing gravitational effects from a rogue floating out there.

In the long term, research funding and investment dried up as the ROI is dissipated. Who will take the risk if the government removes the reward?. Care should be given priority over rationing and cost savings. In a free market, innovators and inventors are rewarded for seeking care. We need thousands of dollars to bring a drug to market. Under ObamaCare be punished as the government directs consumers to cheaper alternatives less effective to save the government resources. The president and his team are looking backasswards health care.
