It’s him again,’ and trudge away?” Well if he’s not going to take this seriously . We thought it was time to give them a rest.” Clearly keen to get something off his chest, he adds: “There’s a problem with the Daleks. They are the most famous of the Doctor’s adversaries and the most frequent. They have been defeated by the Doctor about 400 times. * Less than two years into the job, Doctor Who boss Steven Moffat is getting increasingly disillusioned with the Time Lord’s deadliest enemies. Which means they are the most defeatable enemies in the universe. Surely they should just see the Tardis approaching, say, ‘Oh. When asked about his plans for the Daleks, he gleefully announces in the Radio Times: “Actually, they aren’t going to make an appearance for a while.

A number of journalists — both from traditional media and “citizen journalists” — have also used the real-time information network to report from conflict zones such as Libya and disaster areas such as Haiti. Updated: Anyone who has been following the protests and revolutions in the Middle East for the past few months has probably heard of Andy Carvin, the NPR editor who has been using Twitter to curate news from the region. Now those who see Twitter as a powerful tool for real-time journalism have another example of how it can be done: reporter Brian Stelter has posted a thoughtful and compelling account of how he used Twitter to report on the aftermath of the recent tornado in Joplin, Missouri.

And it’s also interesting to me that Stelter didn’t just post his thoughts and observations about the disaster on Twitter (which he has since archived here), but he also posted updates and photos to his Tumblr blog, and through the mobile image-sharing service Instagram, which is where I first saw them. This is an incredible admission for a reporter to make in some ways, but even more evidence of how the media business and the process of journalism are being disrupted by these new tools.

Although I have been critical of the Times in the past for their persistent lack of links and what I think is the defensive move of launching a paywall, there are encouraging signs that the paper is becoming more open to the social web: It has begun experimenting with Tumblr, among other things, and has also moved to turn its Twitter feed into a human-curated stream instead of just a robotic posting system. Perhaps Stelter’s example will encourage the NYT to experiment even more with these kinds of tools — and then the Times in turn could encourage other media outlets to do so.

Legends of the Fall (1994)Just a month after his Anne Rice adaptation Interview with a Vampire hit theaters, Brad Pitt returned to the multiplex for Legends of the Fall. His role in this forbidden romance earned him his first Golden Globe nomination and almost as important to his career (if not more so), the title of People’s Sexiest Man Alive.

Public apathy had defined the previous year’s presidential race, with neither George W. Bush nor Al Gore stirring much passion among voters. (“Gush and Bore,” they were sometimes derided as.) To many Americans, Bush was still a joke eight months into his presidency — a lazy son of wealth and privilege who’d taken four decades to grow up and who owed his “victory” to voter confusion, a friendly Supreme Court, and the archaic Electoral College system. But he was the only president they had, and as the reality of 9/11 sunk in, they instinctively looked to him for comfort, reassurance and leadership.

But Bush 41’s high mark had represented a collective national sigh of relief — the successful end of Operation Desert Storm, which had evicted Saddam Hussein from Kuwait (and defied widespread predictions that it would result in another Vietnam quagmire). Bush’s 43’s poll numbers represented the nation’s profound, unprecedented anxiety; Americans weren’t celebrating his achievements — they were expressing their support as they waited for him to make a move. His approval rating soared to 95 percent — a few points better than the record-shattering mark his father has set in early 1991. But now, Bush felt emboldened.

This was not a climate conducive to the opposition party playing its role. The economy still seemed fragile; if Bush was going to be vulnerable in 2004, they reasoned, it would be because of that — not his post-9/11 foreign policy. Bush’s request for military authorization, warning Americans that engagement in the Gulf could lead to massive casualties — the next Vietnam, many suggested. As Bush and his team ramped up their push for war with Iraq in ‘02 — first subtly, then blatantly — many Democrats in Congress resolved not to make the same mistake twice. In that war’s aftermath, they’d all eaten crow (and some of them stayed off the 1992 presidential campaign trail because of their “no” votes). In the run-up to the first Gulf War, most Democrats in Congress had sided against George H.W.

Bush’s administration once so grandiosely labeled the Global War on Terror. In every way that matters, he will fight on, barring a major Obama administration policy shift in Afghanistan, and it’s we who will ensure that he remains on the battlefield that George W. Unfortunately, in every way that matters for Americans, it’s an illusion that Osama bin Laden is dead.

Bush picked up a bullhorn and promised “the people who knocked these buildings down will hear all of us soon!” That would be the beginning of a brief few years of soaring American hubris and fantasies of domination wilder than those of any caliphate-obsessed Islamic fundamentalist terrorist, and soon enough they would leave us high and dry in our present world of dismal unemployment figures, rotting infrastructure, rising gas prices, troubled treasury, and a people on the edge. Those chants of “USA! USA!” on the announcement of his death were but faint echoes of the ones at Ground Zero on September 14, 2001, when President George W.

President George W. The more I learned about the war’s opening, the more I thought about the U.S. Bush and his key advisors had long hungered to dislodge Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein from power. invasion of Iraq. Like the archduke’s assassination, the attacks of September 11, 2001, gave them the excuse they had been waiting for — even though there was no connection whatsoever between the hijackers, mainly Saudis, and Saddam Hussein’s regime.
