For their new book, Ogas and Gaddam analyzed the results of 400 million online searches for porn and uncovered some startling insights into what men and women may really want from each other at least sexually. I spoke recently with Ogas.

That has more punch than any other kind of erotica. These are stories written by amateurs, mostly women, about characters from pop culture, movies, books, etc. The most popular erotica for women is the romance novel. Women prefer stories to visual porn by a long shot. This is something that has really exploded on the Internet. The second most popular would be fan fiction.

The research provides the first evidence that early ACC formation played a vital role in the formation of the modern ocean structure. The paper, titled “Impact of Antarctic Circumpolar Current development on late Paleogene ocean structure,” is published in the May 27, 2011, issue of Science.”What we have found is that the evolution of the Antarctic Circumpolar Current influenced global ocean circulation much earlier than previous studies have shown,” said Katz, who is assistant professor of earth and environmental science at Rensselaer. The organisms, known as benthic foraminifera, are found in extremely long cores of sediments drilled from the bottom of the ocean floor.During their lifetime, foraminifera incorporate certain elements and elemental isotopes depending on environmental conditions. Previous research has placed the development of the deep ACC (greater than 2,000 meters water depth) in the late Oligocene (approximately 23-25 million years ago). This blocking of heat enabled the formation and preservation of the Antarctic ice sheets, according to Katz. This is well after the global cooling pattern had been established. The findings place development of the ACC’s global impact much closer to the time that Antarctica separated from South America. In the more tropical environs of the Eocene, ocean circulation was much weaker and currents were more diffuse. Warmer ocean waters result in warmer air temperatures and vice versa. By analyzing the ratios of different isotopes and elements, the researchers are able to reconstruct the past environmental conditions that surrounded the foraminifera during their life. The ACC instead redirects some of that warm surface water back up toward the North Atlantic, creating the Antarctic Intermediate Water. Today, ocean temperatures vary considerably and redistribute warm and cold water around the globe in significant ways.”As the global ocean currents were formed and strengthened, the redistribution of heat likely played a significant role in the overall cooling of the Earth,” Katz said. And no current is more significant than the ACC. More detailed information on Katz’s isotopic analysis methods can be found at http://green.rpi.edu/archives/fossils/index.html.Analysis of these isotopes from sediment cores extracted directly off the North American Atlantic coast showed the earliest evidence for the Antarctic Intermediate Waters, which circulates strictly as a direct consequence of the ACC. And it is this circumpolar circulation that Katz’s research concludes was responsible for the development of our modern four-layer ocean current and heat distribution system. To come to her conclusions, Katz looked at the uptake of different elemental isotopes in the skeletons of small organisms found in ocean sediments. A debate has long been raging in the scientific community on what changes in our global climate system led to such a major shift from the more tropical, greenhouse climate of the Eocene to the modern and much cooler climates of today.New research published in the journal Science, led by Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute scientist Miriam Katz, is providing some of the strongest evidence to date that the Antarctic Circumpolar Current (ACC) played a key role in the major shift in the global climate that began approximately 38 million years ago. Specifically, they looked at isotopes of oxygen and carbon, along with ratios of magnesium versus calcium. This finding is the first evidence of the effects of shallow ACC formation. With this research, Katz and her colleagues used information from ocean sediments to place the global impact of the ACC to approximately 30 million years ago, when it was still just a shallow current.Oceans and global temperatures are closely linked. It had previously been thought that the currents moving through this new continental gateway could not be strong enough at such shallow depths to affect global ocean circulation.Katz points out that the larger cooling trend addressed in the paper has been punctuated by many short, but often significant, episodes of global warming. Often referred to as the “Mixmaster” of the ocean, the ACC thermally isolates Antarctica by preventing warm surface waters from subtropical gyres to pass through its current. This resulted in fairly mild oceans and temperatures worldwide, according to Katz. As a result, heat was more evenly distributed around the world. Such ancient episodes of warming are another significant aspect of her research program, and play an important role in understanding the modern warming of the climate occurring on the planet.”By reconstructing the climates of the past, we can provide a science-based means to explore or predict possible system responses to the current climate change,” Katz said. The temperature differences of that era, known as the late Eocene, between the equator and Antarctica were only half of what they are today. “This finding is particularly significant because it places the impact of initial shallow ACC circulation in the same interval when the climate began its long-term shift to cooler temperatures.”There has been a debate over the past 40 years on what role the Antarctic Circumpolar Current had in the underlying cooling trend on Earth.

The former student at Oak Park-River Forest High School in Oak Park, Illinois was taken into custody on Monday for putting together a list that described 50 of his female fellow students “by explicit, derogatory nicknames and assessed their physical appearance, sexual desirability, sexual activity and other characteristics,” which he then posted on Facebook. He also printed out hundreds of copies of the list and passed them out at the school during lunch before being stopped by staff.

The list ranked the girls using a ten-point scale for facial features, a five-point scale for various body parts and whether their “stock” was up or down; they were also assigned nicknames like “The Designated Drunk” and “The Amazing Bisexual.” It actually came to light in January, leading to the student’s expulsion in February, but that wasn’t enough for some people. “Based on the evidence, the juvenile offender was charged with disorderly conduct and referred to [juvenile] court.”. “The subject was found to be responsible for an offensive list,” said Oak Park Police Detective Commander. LaDon Reynolds.

The father of one of the girls who appeared on the list said he was pleased that the kid was arrested but expressed concern that a disorderly conduct charge was inadequate for a “very serious offense that affected many people.” Nonetheless, he added, “I’m gratified that the investigation continued, and that charges are being filed. I’m hopeful they consider additional charges as they gather more evidence.”.

I’m sure there wasn’t a crack squad of Chicago’s finest working the case 24 hours a day but even so, isn’t this all a bit much for a stupid high school stunt?. But the obvious question is, what other evidence is there to gather? Unless there’s a lot more to this case than is being reported, what we’ve got here is a three month police investigation into some idiot kid’s home-made “Hot or Not” list on Facebook.

All future spacewalks—including one during the final shuttle voyage this summer—will be performed by full-time space station residents. "Assembly complete. About five hours into today’s spacewalk, another milestone was achieved: 1,000 hours of spacewalking at the Space Station. Amazing," spacewalker Gregory Chamitoff said once the 50-foot boom was latched securely in place. The Endeavour astronauts wished the future spacewalkers well as the hatch to the outside was shut. "Boy, this is a big space station," he marveled several minutes later.

(AP) – Astronaut Mike Fincke ran into trouble today while trying to lubricate a joint in the life-sustaining solar power system of the International Space Station, losing one bolt and getting a washer stuck in a crevice. "Bummer," said his spacewalking partner, Andrew Feustel. More». Fincke, one of NASA's most experienced spacemen, had to settle for a partial lube job, after the bolts holding down covers on the massive joint started popping off unexpectedly.

Cameron will want to gauge Obama’s resolve to find a political settlement in Afghanistan that puts pressure on the Afghan president, Hamid Karzai, to hold detailed reconciliation talks with the Taliban. Karzai and the Pakistani prime minister, Yousaf Gilani, have upgraded a joint Afghan-Pakistan peace commission, and Cameron and Obama are likely to argue that the killing of Osama bin Laden provides a new context in which those talks can take place.

The White House has described the address as the anchor speech of the European trip. The two leaders will also stage a joint press conference, and enjoy a brief barbecue in the Downing Street garden. Following the Downing Street meeting, the president and Cameron will attend an event hosted by Samantha Cameron and Michelle Obama to honour US and British service members and veterans. Obama will then make his historic address to members of both houses in Westminster Hall.

Apple needs to cut ties with iTunes making iOS capable of becoming an entirely self-sustaining standalone platform. While smart phones and tablets are not replacements for full-fledged laptops and desktops just yet, things are heading down that road for many buyers. Developers and geeks might not switch over to a mobile device anytime soon, but there are a countless number of people who only need to get online for browsing the web, checking emails, and other simple tasks. After unpacking an iPad 2 or iPhone 4, new owners still need to tether to a Macintosh or Windows computer with iTunes installed and a network connection to activate their device.

I doubt that Apple will change the ideology behind multitasking in iOS, but I think they should offer a fancier interface for navigating through open apps. While some users believe that iOS should let users have freedom to manage running applications on their own, the current solution is simple and foolproof for the average user. Apple has strict guidelines and limits multitasking to only certain categories of apps to maintain efficiency.

Rather than a list of icons in a horizontal tray at the bottom, Apple should consider introducing an interface with screenshots of running applications for easier identification and rumors indicate that this is already in the works. Mac OS X features a Expose and Spacesfor visually switching between open programs. Even Android 3.0 Honeycomb features thumbnails for the six most recently opened apps.
