Public apathy had defined the previous year’s presidential race, with neither George W. Bush nor Al Gore stirring much passion among voters. (“Gush and Bore,” they were sometimes derided as.) To many Americans, Bush was still a joke eight months into his presidency — a lazy son of wealth and privilege who’d taken four decades to grow up and who owed his “victory” to voter confusion, a friendly Supreme Court, and the archaic Electoral College system. But he was the only president they had, and as the reality of 9/11 sunk in, they instinctively looked to him for comfort, reassurance and leadership.

Apple needs to cut ties with iTunes making iOS capable of becoming an entirely self-sustaining standalone platform. While smart phones and tablets are not replacements for full-fledged laptops and desktops just yet, things are heading down that road for many buyers. Developers and geeks might not switch over to a mobile device anytime soon, but there are a countless number of people who only need to get online for browsing the web, checking emails, and other simple tasks. After unpacking an iPad 2 or iPhone 4, new owners still need to tether to a Macintosh or Windows computer with iTunes installed and a network connection to activate their device.

Never mind that it was illegal, never mind that they broke their agreement; religious sanctimony trumps all. Now here’s the surprise (not): in an official function called Senior Night, they announced a moment of silence…and then said a Christian prayer anyway, to the cheers of the Christian majority. Bastrop High School promised to obey the law against school-led prayer at official events, although they were also petty and mean about it, and have been making life hellish for the young man who complained.
