On April 21, a PlayStation blog post cautioned that it might be “a full day or two” before PSN was restored. But it wasn’t until May 14 that the company announced it had started restoring some services. On May 1, Sony Executive Deputy President Kazuo Hirai told reporters that the service would be restored by the end of that week.

The roughly 77 million customers who have been affected by the outage will be welcomed back with a package of free services and premium content, which depending on where they live and what device they own, may include two free games, a selection of free movie rentals and more than 100 free virtual goods.

I’m seriously considering seeing if I can set up a new master account, because this just sucks now. I absolutely hate the Playstation Network and SONY, due to their lack of ability to communicate with customers, their lack of help when it comes to things like this and their general lack of human decency!. They lie! I’m STILL waiting for a password reset email from them, that they REQUIRED to have done.

I’m perfectly fine waiting as long as need be. I don’t have any complaints; I’m glad my information was safe and that Sony is fighting back with security updates and software changes. It’s much better than having the network slammed back online, only to have the same thing happen again. And I don’t need free perks either.

Apple needs to cut ties with iTunes making iOS capable of becoming an entirely self-sustaining standalone platform. While smart phones and tablets are not replacements for full-fledged laptops and desktops just yet, things are heading down that road for many buyers. Developers and geeks might not switch over to a mobile device anytime soon, but there are a countless number of people who only need to get online for browsing the web, checking emails, and other simple tasks. After unpacking an iPad 2 or iPhone 4, new owners still need to tether to a Macintosh or Windows computer with iTunes installed and a network connection to activate their device.

I doubt that Apple will change the ideology behind multitasking in iOS, but I think they should offer a fancier interface for navigating through open apps. While some users believe that iOS should let users have freedom to manage running applications on their own, the current solution is simple and foolproof for the average user. Apple has strict guidelines and limits multitasking to only certain categories of apps to maintain efficiency.

Rather than a list of icons in a horizontal tray at the bottom, Apple should consider introducing an interface with screenshots of running applications for easier identification and rumors indicate that this is already in the works. Mac OS X features a Expose and Spacesfor visually switching between open programs. Even Android 3.0 Honeycomb features thumbnails for the six most recently opened apps.

AS Byatt, another contemporary writer fascinated by the way, suggests in his foreword to "The Reader Grimm" that exposure to these children curiously flat "stories, with their help the recurrent motifs of talking animals, evil stepmother and the rate of three (brothers, desires, castles, etc), created the "narrative grammar of our minds.. The late British author Angela Carter (who Bernheimer anthology is dedicated) has shown definitively in 1979 with" The Bloody Chamber, "a of the largest collections of short stories 20 century. On the other hand, fairy tales can be a springboard for literature.

After serving on juries for a couple of awards for me, I can attest that judges are always looking for ways to reduce the field, and should not be encouraged to participate in the work that is important for another receiver. "I understand," he said in an e-mail is that the use of stories and fairy tales has not decided on a book of accounts for the National Book Award, just to the right again, change is the same or very little is excluded. "(Although, again, the absence of definitive original make it a difficult case to prove.) Moreover, the rule is probably redundant. According to the executive director of the FBN Augenbraum, Harold, the organization to reconsider the exclusion .

Dictated by the incurable disease, the plot is relentless, but, surprisingly, in ways that death can twist life. As a novelist, Shriver has met all its protagonist: She knows her material, diseases of the novel, she believes in the fiction, the courage to show ordinary people in extreme situations, and uses a simple style and voice sprinkled with anger sometimes. Now he is dying of mesothelioma, praises his dedication aesthetics. Glynis How serious condition, the Good Shepherd is the great art or craft items to be addressed: When you need to calculate the costs of extending a life of suffering? When suicide may be a decision that risk? To view and comment Shriver includes the best friend of Pastor Jackson, who is raising a child lost in familial dysautonomia and providing entertainment invective libertarian.

TON features nothing but photos of things organized, well, neatly. And in this day and age of chaos and clutter, it is perhaps one of the most serene and meditative destination on the Web, beckoning thousands of neat freaks and order mongers to its soothing shores daily. Lots and lots of things (cars, pens, bottles, leaves, you name it). Almost exactly a year ago, the Indianapolis-based designer created the website Thingsorganizedneatly.com. For people with OCD, or even just your garden-variety anal retentives, Austin Radcliffe is somewhat of a savior, shaman and cult leader all rolled into one. neatly. We sat down with the man to try to find his inner slob.

And through his father he entered the business of type design rather than going to university. At the age of 17 Carter studied punchcutting with P.H. Enschedé en Zonen in Haarlem, the Netherlands. Last fall the John D. The two men, plus Cherie Cone and Rob Friedman, left Linotype in 1981 to establish Bitstream, one of the first digital type foundries. MacArthur Foundation named Matthew Carter a foundation fellow. One year later he returned to London and set up shop as a lettering artist and typographic advisor to Crosfield Electronics, English distributors of the Photon phototypesetting machine. and Catherine T. The so-called genius grant simply confirmed what those of us in the small design world already knew: that Carter is one of the most important type designers of the past half century. Rädisch at Joh. He was born into the world of type design in 1937 as the son of Harry Carter, the type historian. In 1965 Carter joined Mergenthaler Linotype in Brooklyn, where he worked closely with Mike Parker on adapting the Linotype library to the then-new world of phototype. Ten years later Carter and Cone went out on their own as Carter & Cone Type, and ever since Carter has worked as a freelance type designer — though often in collaboration with Font Bureau — for a wide range of clients, including the Hamilton Wood Type Museum.

Do such classification quibbles bother you, or do they provide you with an opportunity for a new design? Are there specific examples of inscriptional lettering that sparked Carter Sans Pro in the same way that the lettering on the reliquary of Justin II provided the basis for Sophia?. Some people get around this slippery slope by declaring that any deviation from a straight stem or stroke disqualifies a letter as a true sans serif. I rather like the term “flare serif.” But there is always the sticky question as to where the dividing line lies between a sans serif such as Optima with flared strokes and a flare serif such as Icone or your new Carter Sans Pro. The typefaces I mentioned above would have been classified as “Flareserifs” by Bitstream, but I think this is a misnomer because they don’t really have serifs as such.

I am glad you brought up Albertus earlier, since I was immediately reminded of it upon seeing Carter Sans Pro. Your N, U and J are very much like his, but that is where the similarities seem to end. Did you get the idea for what I call the “German” J — with that horizontal top stroke — from Albertus? Did any other “flare serif” typefaces influence features of Carter Sans Pro?.

The results were excellent and were improved still further by ingenious software that raised the conical router bit as it approached acute internal angles in order to cut very sharp crotches. In November 2009, Jim and Bill Moran organized a weekend “Wayzgoose” at the Hamilton Museum. I made my way to Two Rivers, Wis., for the first time. Participants were invited to print from these as one of the weekend’s activities. I had hoped from the beginning of the project that printers would find ways to experiment with this two-faced type but I was quite unprepared for the inventiveness of the first results. Without any prompting from me or the Museum’s staff — and to our great delight — all manner of pages emerged from the presses, one color, two colors, two impressions, multiple impressions, in register, out of register, right way up, upside down, sideways. They abandoned the previous method of cutting from patterns and found a local sign manufacturer with a CNC router that could work directly from my digital data. Alphabets of both versions were set up on Vandercook presses, the positive letters inked in red, the negative in black. Fonts of both the positive and negative versions of the type had been successfully cut in wood at 12-line (that is, 2-inch) size by then, still under its working name of Carter Latin.

This led me in turn to the Beinecke Library to pore over their copy of the book and its type — the archetype of Roman type for me. The signs, whether free-standing or attached to walls, reminded me of inscriptions, and this led me to think about the inscriptional origins of Roman caps and the everlasting problem of reconciling capitals with lowercase. The one for signs (called Street) was the more urgent because the development of signs for the campus had already started. For me, the moment when the first true synthesis occurred was in the type of De Aetna. I knew that the lettering would be in white reversed out of dark blue, and that the main element of the sign, the name of the building, would be in capitals. The Yale type was planned from the outset to have two versions, one for print, the other for signs.

It’s a paradox that the Street face, which is for use at large sizes, has the characteristics of type for very small sizes when compared to the “normal” Print version. You never see an outdoor sign for the first time straight in front of your nose; you see it at a distance, at an angle, at night, coming round a corner, through the window of a bus, or driving past at 70 mph. The proportions of the Print face are different from those of the prototype, partly to suit contemporary taste, partly because the face will often be set at sizes smaller than the prototype. [Griffo's type in De Aetna was ca. 16-point.] The reason, I suppose, is that both sign types and tiny types have to work in difficult typographic environments. This was the result of tests we did on the readability of the signs. The differences are even more exaggerated in the Street version, which is heavier, more widely spaced and bigger in the x-height than the Print face.

Forward-looking statements are all statements other than historical facts, such as statements regarding assumptions, expectations, beliefs and projections about future events or conditions. The accuracy of the Company’s assumptions, expectations, beliefs and projections depends on events or conditions that change over time and are thus susceptible to change based on actual experience, new developments and known and unknown risks, including those created by general market conditions, competition and the possibility that events may occur beyond the Company’s control, which may limit its ability to maintain or improve its operating results or financial condition or acquire additional printing businesses. The Company gives no assurance that the forward-looking statements will prove to be correct and does not undertake any duty to update them. You can generally identify forward-looking statements by the appearance in such a statement of words like “anticipate,” “believe,” “continue,” “could,” “estimate,” “expect,” “intend,” “may,” “might,” “plan,” “potential,” “predict,” “forecast,” “project,” “should” or “will” or other comparable words or the negative of such words. The Company’s actual future results might differ from the forward-looking statements made in this press release for a variety of reasons, which include weakness in the economy, financial stability of its customers, the sustained growth of its digital printing business, seasonality of election-related business, its ability to adequately manage business expenses, including labor costs, the unfavorable outcome of legal proceedings, the lack of or adequacy of insurance coverage for its operations, the continued availability of raw materials at affordable prices, retention of its key management and operating personnel, satisfactory labor relations, the potential for additional goodwill impairment charges, its ability to identify new acquisition opportunities, negotiate and finance such acquisitions on acceptable terms and successfully absorb and manage such acquisitions in a timely and efficient manner, as well as other risks described under the heading “Risk Factors” of our Annual Report on Form 10-K and the risk factors and cautionary statements described in the other documents the Company files or furnishes from time to time with the Securities and Exchange Commission, including its Quarterly Reports on Form 10-Q and Current Reports on Form 8-K. Should one or more of the foregoing risks or uncertainties materialize, or should the Company’s underlying assumptions, expectations, beliefs or projections prove incorrect, the Company’s actual results may vary materially from those anticipated in its forward-looking statements, and its business, financial condition and results of operations could be materially and adversely affected. This press release contains “forward-looking statements” within the meaning of Section 27A of the Securities Act of 1933, as amended, and Section 21E of the Securities Exchange Act of 1934, as amended, in which the Company discusses factors it believes may affect its performance or results in the future.

Management’s opinion regarding the usefulness of these non-GAAP financial measures to investors and a description of the ways in which management used such measures can be found in the Current Report on Form 8-K we filed today with the Securities and Exchange Commission. This press release also contains references to the non-GAAP financial measures of Adjusted EBITDA, which we define as earnings, or net income, before interest, income taxes, depreciation and amortization, goodwill impairment charges, litigation and other charges, share-based compensation expense, non-cash foreign currency transaction gains and losses and net losses/gains from asset dispositions, Free Cash Flow, which we define as net cash provided by operating activities less capital expenditures plus proceeds from assets dispositions, Adjusted Operating Income, which we define as operating income before goodwill charges, litigation and other charges, share-based compensation expense, and non-cash foreign currency transaction net (gain)/loss, Adjusted Operating Margin, which we define as Adjusted Operating Income divided by sales, Adjusted Net Income, which we define as net income (loss) before goodwill charges, litigation and other charges, share-based compensation expense, non-cash foreign currency transaction net (gain)/loss, all net of tax, and Adjusted Diluted Earnings Per Share, which we define as Adjusted Net Income divided by diluted weighted average number of common shares outstanding. Reconciliations of these non-GAAP financial measures to the most directly comparable GAAP financial measures are provided in the tables below.

able to show the death of Bin Laden's death without showing horrific images, "Shahin said." On one hand, you have to show the world that Bin Laden is dead. On the other hand, we must also avoid provoking the feelings of angry Muslims and followers of Bin Laden would be better if the United States

"The most important thing is to ensure the nation moves forward and the experiences of the closure of this terrible tragedy." The photos should be released, the graphic it is, "said Mark Pasetsky, a strategist for social media, commenting Forbes. A photo of bin Laden dead and will only be an exclamation point on 'Obama's historic announcement. .

"I will say this: For my part, based on information I received, I am absolutely convinced that the man was killed yesterday was Osama bin Laden .." "My instinct is probably necessary to release these images, but you know, I will respect the decision that the president did," said Lieberman.

There seems no doubt about his death among the followers of Bin Laden – radical web sites that talk about the terrorist network of Bin Laden used to talk about the world mourned his death with a touch of contempt, which is celebrated as a martyr and Qaeda takeover to continue despite the death of their leader.

It’s slow, clunky and — in spite of the hype — about as revolutionary as an IBM Selectric. Still, anyone who’s spent time installing operating systems knows that the process does typically take some time. Yes, Unity was bad under the last major distribution, but it might have actually gotten worse with Natty Narwhal. A long upgrade time is forgivable (particularly when comparing the Ubuntu upgrade to a major one for Windows), but that blasted Unity desktop bundled with the latest Ubuntu distribution is downright frustrating.

Think of the Unity desktop as something similar to those icon-laden task bars under Mac OS X or Microsoft Windows 7, only slower and less useful. Unity is, in essence, a strip of icons that sits mockingly on the left side of the screen and makes running and switching between applications very clumsy. Apple and Microsoft are years ahead of Ubuntu in that regard.

Scrolling through the icons is a cumbersome process, indeed. In order to save space, the Unity icon strip will automatically hide and pop back up when the mouse pointer gets anywhere close to it. It’s buggy, too. The “buggy” part rears its ugly head as the weird, auto hide feature is rather hit or miss — the desktop might pop back up when you want it to or it might not, leaving the impression it’s either lazy or shy.

Getting rid of Unity is an easy enough matter — simply click the “shut down” icon in the upper right hand corner of the screen, choose “system settings” from the pull down menu, go to “login screen” and the select “Ubuntu classic” as the default session. The Unity desktop is the default for Ubuntu 11.04, but the Gnome 2 desktop is still available to people who don’t care one whit for Unity.

Those days of the Gnome 2 interface (which still looks a heck of a lot like Windows XP and/or Mac OS 9) are clearly numbered. Here’s something else for Linux fans to consider — seen Gnome 3 yet? The same philosophies that gave birth to Unity appear to be firmly in place with the latest version of Gnome 3. Unfortunately, it seems Ubuntu won’t use Gnome 2 as a backup when 11.10 (Oneiric Ocelot) is released in a few months.

Still, Unity needs quite a bit of work in terms of both stability and working out another issue. Look at it this way — Gnome 2 is great for mouse-driven systems, but what if we’re heading toward more touch screens and the like that will make navigating in interfaces like Gnome 2 downright impractical? Unity (and Gnome 3, for that matter) make a lot of sense when one thinks about where technology could be headed. How is all that typing going to work well on a touchscreen?. Finding applications under Unity, see, means either finding the program directly under the sidebar or searching for an app by typing its name and searching for it (and pinning it to the dock for easy future access if you want to do that).

The Unity dock simply doesn’t have enough space for icons for everything, so how is that going to work? To be fair, Windows and Mac OS will struggle with the same issue (and probably are already). Think of it this way — you can search for apps by typing them in on your iPhone, but how often do you do that? No, you’ve got icons for everything and you touch them to launch them.

Outside of the dreadful Unity interface, there’s really not a whole lot to criticize. One does have to wonder if Unity will improve with the next distribution or just got more bloated and irritating. All in all, 11.04 is — on the surface — a refined release rather than a huge leap forward from the last distribution.

Honestly, I’m glad I went ahead and upgraded as there are a few enhancements and — with Gnome 2 activated — my system acts like it did under 10.10. You’ll get the latest kernel and the aforementioned wonder patch and those are enhancements worth mentioning, but this release still seems centered around the Unity desktop. The final verdict here is this — if you’re happy with Ubuntu 10.10, you’ve got to ask yourself if you’ll gain that much with 11.04. Once Unity is turned off, the system looks and behaves much like it did running under 10.10 in spite of the upgrade.

Sashin — I’m revising the article to point out that the installation took place on a netbook and was an upgrade rather than a fresh install. Why? Fresh installs are quicker, for one thing and — for another — this install was about as slow limited hardware as Windows (there’s an irony there). Also, Unity hogs real estate rather than saves it compared to the classic Ubuntu desktop.
